Hi
Seems to be an issue every year, one city or another boo’s the other countries Anthem. Is there any steps the NHL could take to stop this? Does anyone have any ideas?

The signing of National Anthems is antiquated at best. It was introduced during WW II, mostly at baseball games, to lift spirits, and increase morale for the war effort.
I don’t need to be reminded of what country I am in, or reminded to be patriotic at sporting events.

  2. McMoose--voted McCain/Palin says:

I don’t think you can really make anyone not boo the other nations national anthem other than having the rink announcer reminding before they sing on how disrespectful it is to boo another teams national anthem. Otherwise it’s up to the fans. I can’t imagine booing another countrys anthem, but some people hit the bars a little too early or are just that disrespectful. Hard to believe, but there are big jerks out there…
How about for everytime someone boo’s the other countrys national anthem, one ice girl gets fired.

  3. canada speaks says:

Quit singing the anthems. The players on the ice are from 10 different countries, so to sing only 2 anthems (at most) is pretty meaningless. Not to mention that it just lets the players sit there and get cold after a couple of warm up laps.
Montreal has done this sort of thing before, the funny part is they haven’t booed the Canadian anthem yet. Considering how many Quebecers want to separate from Canada you’d think it would only be a matter of time.
I’d also support Ashlee Simpson singing both anthems as a punishment to the fans for their misbehaviour.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5YPiBx9M…

  4. Expat Mike says:

Who cares?!? Americans boo our anthem, Canadians boo yours, all we’ve learned is that both countries have low-class idiots in them. Why try to stop it?
What’s next? “Encouraging” fans not to write signs deriding opposing players and teams? “Encouraging” fans not to chant “Sloppy Seconds *clap clap clapclapclap* ” whenever Sean Avery has the puck? (why has that not caught on yet?) It could go on forever, and who’s to say where the line should be drawn?
I see no point for the NHL to do anything to “encourage” morons to express themselves in a less moronic manner.

cdn24fan – When you go and watch 2 Canadian teams why would you hear the Star Spangled Banner? When I goto games the only time I hear both Anthems is when we play a Canadian team not another US team.
This is a means to show respect for the country that is participating in the event. I don’t find this any more mundane than watching wrestling with their annoying little themes of the week but the fans dont seem to mind. Ignorance can be found regardless where one goes.

  6. Joə B- Brandon Yip fan says:

No..It’s there right to boo. They paid for their ticket so they can cheer or boo as much as they want.We could choose to boo the Canadian National anthem but we chose not too.
If they try to curb that then they might try to stop fans from being loud or try to outlaw the “Crosby sucks” chants or taunting or whatever..
As long as gestures aren’t obscene they won’t have a problem with it.

  7. Bob Loblaw Trois says:

    YES! Don’t PLAY IT!!
I mean, what is the sense of it anyways? They were talking about that during a Canadian Sports Show here yesterday…..apparently (before my time) they used to play it at movie theaters before the show too…….we certainly don’t miss it there……so why would we miss it at a sports event- ANOTHER form of entertainment.
I also agree with Noah….I don’t need to be reminded of what country I live in.

  8. cdn24fan says:

I agree with Bob, we may as well get rid of it. It in theory does not represent the teams yet when I go see Mtl vs Ottawa I only hear O Canada, and I’m sure Joe doesn’t hear O Canada when Philly hosts the Pens.
If we sang then to represent the players we would be singing 10 anthems at some games.

  9. Sentient Tornado says:

In countries like the US and Canada, we have the freedom to be respectful or disrespectful during a national anthem, including our own.
Freedom comes with a price…namely, people using their freedom to be ignorant and rude.

  10. Brad NotPitt says:

how about snipers in the rafters?!??!
in NBA, a technical foul can be called to the home team if the fans are too rowdy.
so, in NHL home team should be assessed an unsportsman like conduct if fans are being idiots and booing anthems. Friggin Americans!!

  11. TexHabsf says:

Give them sheet music with the lyrics. I don’t know what % of Canadians / Quebecois know all the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner or what % of Americans know those to O Canada, but it’d be a start.

  12. Dale M says:

Sell beer at half price then put a lock on the bathroom doors.
Other than that, probably not much the NHL can do without infringing on the rights of an individual.

  13. Melissa( says:

Well ,they did pay for the ticket.
But I don’t believe in it because its way disrespectful.
but like they say “hockey fans aren’t like other fans”

  14. JOHN D says:

Not really,I think the shame that they put on their City and Country is punishment enough.

  15. Aviator says:

If they boo, we release AIDS infected monkey sperm on them.
